Swapping 2.93:1 rearend gears for 3.91:1 gears in a 742 SureGrip case.
I had once bought an '64 Imperial rearaxle, from which I used the 3rd member.
The case contained a SureGrip with 2.93 gears. I used this setup in my '67 Newport for a year, and then decided it was time to move up...
I bought a Richmond 3.91:1 gearset, and started to work on my first rearaxle-gearchange.
First I started with disassembly of the old unit. I took everything apart and cleaned the Suregrip unit and gearcase with good old brake-cleaner.
Removed all the bearings.

Then started to press on a new bearing with spacer-shims on the pinion. Because you don't how many shims you need upfront, you'll have to do this more than once...
Turned out I had to the change shims 4 times before I got it right.

Checking piniondepth in the housing is the way to see if you are 'in the ballpark' with your shims...

Here I'm installing the new carrier bearings with a press...
Checking the gearmesh with white paste. If the gear-contactmarkings are wrong, piniondepth must change. Which in my case, were wrong 3 times...
But after the 3rd time I got it right, so I could continue assembling the unit by installing the remaining parts.
